The Challenge
As part of a UX/UI Bootcamp project, I explored how a travel platform like Expedia could increase user engagement beyond the booking stage. While travelers actively use the platform to plan trips, interaction often drops significantly once a booking is completed. The challenge was to design a feature that would encourage users to stay engaged before, during, and after their journey through meaningful rewards, progress tracking, and gamified experiences.
The Outcome
To address the challenge, I designed "Travel Challenges" a feature concept to gamify the travel booking experience and allows user to
-
Discover destination-based challenges
-
Unlock milestones through bookings
-
Track travel progress
-
Earn rewards and badges
-
Stay connected throughout their trip

How It Works
Travel Challenges is designed as a simple engagement loop that keeps travelers connected to Expedia throughout their journey. By linking challenges to real travel activities and rewarding meaningful progress, the experience creates reasons for users to return before, during, and after their trip.

Start by booking a flight or hotel to unlock destination based challenges.
Join
Choose a challenge that matches your interests and travel plans.
Complete
Finish milestones through bookings, activities, and travel experiences.

Key Decisions
1
Booking is the exclusive entry point for users to access the milestones
WHY
-
Drives revenue (main business goal).
-
Flexible entry via flight or hotel booking for wider inclusion.
-
Restricts access to ensure it remains a booking, not a general challenge, platform.

2
Milestone completion requires making bookings directly through the app.
WHY
-
Core Alignment: Driving bookings and revenue is the main business goal.
-
Flexible Access: Users can choose either a flight or hotel booking, making the challenge inclusive.
-
Restricted Access: Requires a booking to prevent the app from becoming a general challenge hosting platform.

3
Users have non-linear flexibility to choose the order of milestones.
WHY
-
Non-linear Progression: Allows for a personalized experience based on user preference.
-
User Flexibility: Prioritizes user choice, which boosts engagement.
-
Planning Tool: Serves as a valuable planning resource, especially for new travelers designing their itinerary.

Testing & Iterations
I conducted usability testing with users to evaluate the clarity of the designed solution. The sessions helped identify areas of confusion and informed several improvements to the final experience.
